Image
We. held our fair in the afternoon. We have no hall anymore, so our fair was held in different classrooms with some exhibits outdoors. Here is a selection of photos. First class programmed Bee Bots 6th class correlated height and foot length in a scattergraph 4th class tested for acids and bases Senior Infants made butter. Every visitor had to shake the jar! They got a cracker with the butter on it. Junior Infants demonstrated their boats 3rd class tested for starch 4th class showed how to assemble and use pulley systems Which foods have the most starch? Float or sink? 6th class demonstrated this, their blog system .

Testing for acids and bases - 4th class

4th class investigated acids and bases. First we examined the pH scale, and saw where common household items appeared on it. We made indicator by steeping red cabbage in hot water for an hour. We ensured fair testing by using exactly 5ml of indicator and 5ml of substance under test in each case. We found that lemon juice was the most acidic item we tested, with bicarbonate of soda being the most alkaline. We found that tea and coffee are both acidic, but that reading the indicator colour level was hard because both tea and coffee are brown.

They then took turns dropping in the tablet. The children were amazed by the reaction that made our Lava Lamps.

Testing for starch -3rd Class

Image
Third Class completed an experiment testing a variety of materials for Starch. Firstly we found out what Starch is. We then placed a variety of items onto Paper Plates. We mixed some iodine solution with water. We recorded our predictions before carrying out the test. We tested for Starch in groups. Third class enjoyed testing for starch in materials by dropping some iodine solution on to them. We were amazed to see the  the item turning a blue/black colour if starch was present. If starch wasn't present it remained the orange/brown colour. If we were to carry out this experiment again we would test even more items for Starch.
